rude service combined with laziness

i ordered a new replacement back wheel from them a few weeks ago. i tried to pick it up, but found that they clearly did not order it. the owner made me wait for the mechanic who "knew the way around better and can find it but is on break." when the mechanic came back 2hrs later, he tried to pawn me off a used wheel that wasn't even the right size and claimed that it'll fit saying, "it'll fit a bit small but it'll do." (does a road wheel fit on a hybrid bike? technically, i guess it could...). when he realized that i'm not an idiot, the shop crew tried to sell me another wheel (not the one i ordered) which was $30 more expensive than what was originally quoted. he finally said, buy it or leave it. clearly, i left it. think twice about buying a bike here as the customer service is horrid. if you are a novice with bikes, don't be fooled by the vintage bikes and puppy in the front, beware as they will try to take advantage of you.
Good Times, Great Bikes

Owner Chung Pai is very friendly and knowledgeable about not only the offered selection, but also about bicycles and riding in general. He was kind enough to fit each bicycle before test-riding, and patiently explained the features and benefits of each style. I purchased a vintage cruiser, which he polished immediately so that I could take it home right away. The store itself is no-frills, though an adorable puppy (his own) hangs out in the window, literally begging to be petted. Chung invited me to come back during the summer for the Slushies, and I most certainly will! This store is fantastic, and I almost hesitated to write this review, lest this hidden jewel become the next big thing of the Lower East Side. And then I wouldn't get my Slushie.

Although a few vintage bikes were in beautiful shape, those were priced at $1,000. Most were in the $400 - $600 range for bikes that had new tires but no other servicing. Many were rusty and rattled when ridden. For those who don't care about looks, such a knock-around bike is great in the city, but you can get a new bike for close to what these guys charge for a piece of junk.

I got a bike here, a nice 70s or 80s british road bike for $350. I'm pretty happy with what i got, but i probably overpaid and the work they did on it was not great. It wasn't ready when i came to pick it up (although i came a day after they told me it would be done), so they did a rushed job on it. they left at least a foot of extra cable on the brakes and shifters, i got them cut later and the brakes worked much better. the whole thing was really dirty and some of the components were a little loose. overall, not a great experience,
Don't waste your time or money

I've lived in this same neighborhood for years and this shop represents everything bad with what's become of the East Village.This place is a huge ripoff and they top it with terrible service with plenty of smug attitude.I've been forced to have work done a couple of times here.It's always done wrong,they overcharge and then try to charge again to fix their poor work.There are other bike shops in the area,on 6th off of Ave A, a place called George's Bikes and a place on 14th off of 1st.Give them your business.They are true neighborhood joints-fair with good service.AVOID LANDMARK VINTAGE BIKES! PS their prices on bikes are ridiculously high!

Bike enthusiasts who run vintage shops usually do so at great financial risk. It's totally reasonable to charge overhead that reflects the costs in having vintage on display so that someone can browse at leisure. It's NYC, after all! You can see the attention that went into the selection. I collect old Schwinns, which this store has in abundance and in very good condition. If you don't have the patience to deal with Ebay and varying accuracy (or lack thereof) in descriptions, let alone the $100 shipping costs to get it here, and want the ability to test ride vintage first, this is your shop. I didn't test their service dept, so I rated it average. But the bike selection on hand is near museum quality.
A Terrible Rental Experience

This is a location close to where I live, $35 for a 24 hour rental, while not cheap, is reasonable, so I decided to rent 2 bikes from them (for me and my girlfriend) for a day trip to governors island. ***** First thing: the selection was terrible. They had 3 bikes to choose from for me and 2 for her. If the term "vintage" means "piece of junk you'd pay 10 bucks for at a garage sale", I guess they were vintage. ***** At any rate. even if it is a crappy bike, you would expect them to be at least tuned up. 2 out of 3 gears worked on her bike and mine shifted down to the lowest setting regardless of which gear I used. To make things worse, and more dangerous, the breaks were next to nonfunctional. **** Clearly neither bike had been serviced for a long time. When I brought this up upon retuning the bikes, expecting at least a sheepish apology if not a discount on the rental, I was informed by a surly Asian dude (the owner??) that he didn't like doing rentals anyway and that he only rented bikes because there was such a demand. He was extremely rude and acted like he had done me some huge favor by renting me the bikes. **** Oh, and I was told the store opened at 11am (on a Monday) for returns; no one bothered to show up until after noon. This lazy, uninterested attitude unfortunately reflects on the products rented (and most likely sold) at Landmark Vintage. I was happy to pay up and never have to go into this store again.
NOT HONEST/ BIKES ARE NOT SAFE TO RIDE

I work near this place so I decided to get a bike from them. A nice young lady helped me. That was the only thing nice about this place. I had tried 2 or 3 bikes. I told them that I needed a bike that was safe since i was riding from brooklyn with my dog to the east village. After almost killing myself and my pup and 2 bikes later I decided to return it. The owner give me a really hard time and was rude to boot! They finally gave me credit for 200. I bought the bike for 300 plus tax and another 100 for locks and stuff. So I took the credit. Then when I went to use it his computer had no recall of the transaction. He told me they dont give credit!!
bad bikes bad attitude, beware

Covering up rust by paint does not stop the rusting process. How can they even claim that it was "professionally restored"? I picked up a Schwinn a few months back after walking by his store with the cute dog. And, all I say is that I wish I saw this post before purchasing. When I attempted to return the bike because it had a number of issues and bad parts, the owner short changed me and said that I should have inspected it before purchasing!! I got less than half of what I paid for. The nerve!! These bikes may have a personality, but the owner has a bad attitude and bad motive. You are buying lemon's here, seriously.
Favorite bike shop

I've had quite different experiences than some of the people posting here. I love the selection -- it's the only place I've been able to find the kind of bike I like. Although I probably paid a little more than I wanted, I hadn't seen anyone else offering me something similar for less. I'm on my second bike from them (after some time, I realized the first one was a little smaller than I needed). Now I've got a '70s vintage Raleigh 3-speed that I got from them in great condition and rides like a dream. In general, I've been really pleased with the quality and price of service I've gotten from there -- and they've helped me with a lot of issues including regular maintenance, repairs and alterations. They understand how to work on older bikes and have a good supply of old parts. I ride every day, year-round, and do almost all my traveling in the city on the bike, so it gets a lot of use! I'm always happy to send people to Landmark. I wouldn't say the boss is a lively, gregarious guy, but I've never had a problem with him, and he treats me just fine. Sorry to hear about the problems others have had -- and also glad that my experiences have been almost completely positive.
