Go to Billy's Bakery where the cupcakes are better and the service is sweet too. Magnolia has become a blight on the W. Village - with unruly throngs blocking the street to passers by, cupcake litter on the side walk. and random restrictions on when/what you can buy (in store cupcake maximums and advance-ordering time periods are set according to the mood swings of the staff). Residents keep hoping that they'll get shut down (again!) by the Board of Health, or that their lease will finally end so that the neighborhood can be rid of them. Magnolia is soooo yesterday and strictly for the unknowing tourist who watched Sex in the City after syndication on TBS.

Too bad Sex and the City (a show I loved) ruined this place. This used to be a nice, quaint and good little bakery. Overall a good bakery but the quality of the bakery items overall plummets on the weekend. Magnolia Bakery suffers from a schizophrenic impulse to treat customers poorly on the weekend when there are too many people in the store. I am stupefied why anyone would put up with the extremely rude staff. My friends and I were treated like children and guess what: them there cupcakes ain't that good. This is nothing but a tourist trap on the weekends. Rude staff and disgusting cupcakes. Greasy frosting and very dry cupcakes. But...during the week, it's a different story. Pleasant staff and I am convinced that the quality of the items overall is better during the week. Despite this "during the week" overall good review, I cannot recommend Magnolia Bakery because on the weekends, the staff acts like a bunch of feral cats and the quality seems to suffer for it.

Boring selections. Normal tasting cupcakes. You can probably make the same, if not better, in your own kitchen. Dont just go stand in line there because it was in Sex and the City or Vogue. Completely overrated. For awesome moist cupcakes with light whipped frosting and a nice variety of flavors, go to Crumbs. For good red velvet cupcakes, go to Buttercup.

I agree with others that Magnolia cupcakes are average at best. The cake is dry and the icing too sweet. Its very similar to processed cakes you can buy in a grocery store. Crumbs isnt that good either. The best cupcakes Ive had in the city so far...Billy's Bakery on 9th Ave. The best cupcakes ive ever had are not in NYC.

Cupcakes are kid food, so if the kids in your life like them - and these get high marks from my kids - Magnolia Bakery has done its job. I, on the other hand, think they're terrible as a dessert form. If I'm going to consume carbs, they'd better count. Which means I get my desserts at French bakeries.

Magnolia and its sister Buttercake are good but Billy's Bakery is the best...

these cupcakes were way too sweet for my tastes. The thick layering of buttercream frosting and the thick density of the cake reminded me of Buttercup. They were lovely looking, though, and come in various colors. Babycakes remains my favorite cupcake bakery.

i love cupcakes. i've tried cupcakes from numerous bakeries from all over the country and heard about magnolia. i went there with incredibly high expectations, but unfortunately the cupcakes were only so-so. the cupcake itself was a bit dry and the icing was nothing special. the red velvet cake was ok, but not as great as i had imagined it to be. in fact, the best thing i had there was the banana bread pudding. i think crumbs has better cupcakes, or if you're in l.a., sprinkles.

I used to love Magnolia Bakery. I admit, I still do love the taste of their cupcakes and their sweeter than sweet frosting is great. But upon visiting the 6th avenue location and seeing the reduced cupcake size and $3/each pricing, I decided to try something else. So I tried the red velvet cake, which looked fantastic but was terribly disappointing. The frosting tasted like cool whip! How can you make red velvet cake without cream cheese frosting!? Did I mention the piece of cake cost $4.25? What a waste.
