manny's shop is indeed heartfelt and close to home as it gets,I met eduardo back in 1992,as I was riding flatland on a gas station near my home,at around 2 am,he whisked by on a motorcycle,and stopped to watch,and told me he was running a local bmx race in his hometown of santiago,about 2 hours north of santo domingo,where I live.that next sunday morning we piled 4 bikes on a cousin's car(I didnt drive yet back then)and met the local riders in santiago,and proceeded to watch eduardo run his track at los reyes.he is all about bikes,and translates that into his work,his shop here,action cycle,is about twice the size as its NY counterpart,and has the same grassroots feel to it,Kimbo,if you read this,cuidate mucho,y na,pa' lante!

I've been going to Manny's for years. Like my loyal mechanics, he's kept my 1980s Nishiki running and servicable, and charges a reasonable rate for his services. When I had to leave my bike or a wheel at the shop for servicing it has always been ready when promised. He upgraded my gears for a ridiculously low price, and it turned out to be a tougher job than he thought but did not ask for more money. They may not have the biggest selection of bicycles for purchase but I think he buys what he thinks the market in the neighborhood will bear. Recently he advised me that it might be time to consider buying a new bicycle better suited for city riding and the crazy hills in the neighborhood. I feel he is honest and I plan to make my next purchase from him because he's trustworthy. The one time I've walked into Tread, I wasn't approached by a salesperson, and just left. I'll stick with small and close to home.

This is the only store between 175th street and Dyckman in Manhattan. I used to think it was important to support the local businesses. But after a couple of bad experiences, I advise avoiding this place, even for Air ($.50). Good selection of accessories but as for bikes, Target would be a better deal, as the customary maintenance is suspect. Encourages payment in cash to avoid sale tax as well as avoid recourse if the consumer is unhappy. The first time I left my bike for annual maintenance/tune -up overnight. In the Afternoon when I returned, he had not done anything with the bike as promised. He told me come back in 20 minutes, and merely adjusted the gear shift, -no cleaning, no lube etc. A waste of $40! More recently, popped 2 spokes of the rear tire, reluctantly walked to his shop and he replaced them for $12. Somehow he had misplaced the Quick release Axle that came with my Giant/ Cypress, and replaced it with whatever was lying around. I only got 3 blocks away when another spoke popped, the rim now severely warped. He had not bothered to readjust the other spokes. Went to Tread on Dyckman and had to replace the rim for $60. no charge for Air, same parts are cheaper, take credit cards, all the things a good store should do! Huge inventory of Bikes and accessories too.
