Dirty. Stale. Tasteless. Expensive. Other than that....

I love Silver Moon Bakery! I have yet to find a pastry or bread that is not delicious, and I have been going daily since moving into the neighborhood two months ago. The breads are all delicious (traditional baguette, rustic baguette), as are the breakfast pastries (the plain brioche and pumpkin muffin with pecans in particular!). It is amazing to me that these bakers excel in every single creation. Especially when bakeries like this one are not common at all in New York. Finally, the dessert pastries (fruit tarts, chocolate mousses, chocolate cakes, etc.) are really among the best I've ever had. The buttery crust of the tarts is sublime, as is the custard beneath the fruit. People come here for coffee and to sit. I like the coffee here, but that is not really the point for me: it's the baked goods that are at the heart of this enterprise. There is often a line all the way onto the sidewalk. I never mind standing in line!

The service is terrible. I ordered an espresso and sat at a table outside. Most the tables were empty. It was raining, so I hoped to sit and enjoy my drink. So a waiter comes out and tells me I can't sit at the tables since I'm not getting table service. I smirked and looked around at all the emptiness. He realized I was annoyed & told me the owner was there and didn't want people not getting table service sitting down. He told me to move to a nearby bench. I had no idea the place even had a waiter since I didn't see him until he asked me to leave (after waiting in line for a while). I guess they're not attentive. I don't appreciate being treated so rudely since I was in fact a paying customer. Also, my espresso was overpriced and not made well. I will never visit this bakery again. In these hard times, there is no reason to treat paying customers so rudely. There are far better places to visit throughout the city.

These days, with growing competition from Le Pain Quotidien, you'd think that the thing that would set a place like this apart would be it's local neighborhood charm and the dedication and love of the owner. Alas, no. The owners are never there (the pastries have been made by the same two staff bakers for years) and the shop floor is run by an arrogant and rude guy who thinks he's better than his customers. Last week, I saw him tell an old lady to "get lost and go to dunkin donuts" after she asked if she could order a coffee without waiting in line for a pastry. Before that he gave attitude to a guy who wanted to order a cake during the breakfast rush. And I've been on the receiving end too. If I were a businessman, I'd poach the staff bakers and open up shop just across the street with some pleasant people on the counter. Until then, I'm going to Le Pain because it's frankly not worth the stress. Oh, and another thing: their coffee is really, really, really awful.
