I know that NYMag recommends Simon Pearce for wedding gifts, so I want to throw up a red flag about their store. Their return policy is a little... odd. We received two wayward, non-registry wedding gifts from Simon Pearce. I knew the store wasn't our style, but my newly minted husband and I got in a cab and dutifully returned the gifts. I've been returning a lot of things lately so I felt like I knew the drill, but Simon Pearce has the worst return policy I'd ever heard of -- it you don't have a gift receipt or know which store the item was purchased from, you can't get store credit. While the women in the store were very nice about it, there was nothing that they could do to help us. You essentially have to walk out of there with something that costs an equal amount, although they did offer to "hold our merchandise" at the store. Happily a couple buying another item was willing to trade our store credit for cash, but that also meant that the store lost an expensive sale. They have some lovely things, but be forewarned -- if you don't know your recipient well and you're not buying off a registry, avoid this store. Their internal accounting problems shouldn't cause your friends and family any grief.

I went to the Simon Pearce store about 1o years ago when it was on Bleeker St. I bought "seconds" lamps at a tremendous discount-about 50% off. I love them. They are tasteful, classic and there is no discernable defect (if you want to spend 30 minutes searching for a bubble-good luck!)
