Disappointed

  • No, I would not go back!

I was in NY for Christmas and went to Montague street to do a little shopping. I visited Tango and was highly disappointed with the service. The staff did not even acknowledge me when I was in the store. I saw some great pieces I wanted to purchase but I refuse to spend my money in a store the treats customers this way. Such a shame to have beautiful, quality merchandise being sold by low quality staff. Based on other posts this appears to be a common practice but I hope the owner addresses this behavior so other customers will have a better experience. -not returning.

My oldest son is fourteen and I have been coming here before he was born. I love this store! I know the owners and they are always nice to me. I can always go in there at the last minute and find everything I need no matter what the occasion. I hope they are there forever.

Awesome Selection, Rude Service

Though, I will likely be back to Tango as Im in Brooklyn Heights often, I will always be concerned about the level of service I will be forced to encounter. The women help you begrudgingly (if at all). The experience is often unpleasant, but the selection is so good... I guess I'll continue to overlook the rudeness... until I can't.

I don't understand how this relatively small store always has all the designers I love. I think the buyer and I are in a mind meld. Theory, Elie Tahari, Majestic, Splendid, Three Dots are all my favorite brands. Fine clothing made of sumptuous fabrics in that mid-price range. True, in these economic times it is not always so easy to cough up the money for great clothes. I shop department store sales and sample sales for my career clothes as much as possible. However, there are some items Tango has long before the other stores do, in the freshest colors and most tantalizing fabrics that I simply MUST own. The staff are very well-informed and always point me in the right direction so that I get to the stuff that's right for me a lot faster. I hope someday to be making enough money to shop at Tango exclusively. What a dream come true that would be.

Quickly found what I wanted

I walked into Tango looking for blazers for work. I explained to the clerk the exact style I wanted, and within seconds she brought three or four right to me. She also helped me to find a blouse to go with my new blazer. Everyone was quite helpful, and I got in and out of the shop fast, which I like. I rarely shop in brick and mortar stores any more because I find it so tiring to have to sift through the entire store to find what I am looking for--it is much easier to shop online and sort by clothing type, color, size, style. But, I always shop for blazers in person because I have trouble finding the right fit. Tango made my in-person experience as painless and satisfying as my online experience, and I will definitely go back to this store in the future.

Nice store (VERY) poor service.

Lovely store poor service. Whenever I'm visiting the Heights (particularly Montague street) I often walk by Tango and admire their window display. Yesterday I finally had a moment to browse. Tango's selection is smart and more or less reasonably priced. I fell in love with an exquisite wrap, a fantastic skirt, and almost went for a smart little black dress. (I have a wedding to go to this weekend), but all that couldn't convince me to buy more than a pair of hosiery after the way their staff treated me. One woman in particular lost her commission when she decided to "Pretty Woman" me. From the start she had sized me up and deemed me a lost cause. Instead of leaving me to browse and make up my mind as to what I wanted to spend my money on, she followed me throughout the store making little comments here and there. Laying out the wrap in such a way as to make the price obvious; commenting cattily was the death knell to any sale she might have made. Yes, I had a Banana Republic bag in my hand (having bought a present for a loved one), but asking me, What time does Ann Taylor close? as she gave me a head to toe glance was so beneath her and the store she works for. Although the owner/manager, who ever he was seemed either oblivious to her antics or condoned them. Shame really, I wasn't expecting such disappointment. I hope you have better results.

What happened to the Brooklyn Consumers I use to know???

After reading the reviews about Bird, Diane T and now Tango I just have to say that all the reveiws have a common thread. The bottom line is that the new Brooklyn shoppers do not get designer brands/labels. This was not the case Five years ago. Designer clothing is an investment it will last you more then one season and can become a perminant item in your wardrobe. What I am getting from these reviews is that the newbie Brooklynites seem to be cheap about spending a little extra on quality and they are more concerned about quanity. If you are willing to pay for overpriced rentals/mortages and overpriced pre-schools and private schools then why complain about spending money on designer clothes.....What's up with that??? this is not the case in Manhattan because in Manhattan if you don't want to shop in Saks, Bloomingdals or Bergdorfs then just go to H&M or Forever 21 for disposable clothing. So please stop complaining and if yo don't like it then don't shop at higher-end boutiques just go to those chain stores that are ruining the garment industry and are the cause to child labor.

Tango does not mark up prices

I worked at Tango for about 5 months last year and feel that I have to respond to the previous two reviewers claims of the store marking up prices. Anyone who has knowledge of the retail industry knows that prices are created based on cost and a set desired margin. Tango does re-tag their items, but that is for inventory purposes. They do not work on a pricing formula that involves increasing suggested retail prices. Actually many of their items are priced slightly under the suggested retail price at which the items are originally tagged. They also offer sales on all items including many brands like Ugg and Longchamp which are not usually included in sales at department stores. Tango is family run and I can tell you from experience that they care a great deal for their customers and go out of their way to please them. The same care is expected of all of their employees.

It's uncanny. The world is full of clothing brands, and yet all my favorites are here in one boutique. I'm also constantly discovering new brands here that I love. The salespeople are very knowledgeable and always know exactly what will look right on me. I can buy a polished Elie Tahari suit for work, and also buy fabulous jeans and super soft tops by Splendid and Three Dots. And these days they've been having a lot more sales. I just bought a pair of Adriano Goldschmied corduroys at 50% off! Now what could be better than that?

I agree with the previous reviewer. This place is way over priced. They remove the manufactures' tags (which include manufacturer's suggested retail price) and replace them with their own. On a few items I've noticed that their prices are even higher than the suggested retail price. They should be ashamed of themselves. If that's not bad enough, most of the help seem to have a chip on their shoulder.
