I sought leather buttons, found them here for 1.00 more per button than in notions district (38th between 7&8 Aves, same quality. Also, the salesman at Tender Buttons could not wait to get rid of his customers. Not so "tender", and overpriced.
If you want extremely fancy buttons for which you are prepared to pay like 60.00 per button, you may find a unique selection here. But for almost anything else, go to the garment district.

Tender Buttons is one of those special little places that is nearly extinct these days--everything from the vast selection of fantastic buttons to the ambiance in the shop. It's organized like a library and begs for quiet study.. it's not the place you should be going if you need something right.this.minute. The staff is not rude. This is just not the kind of place you go to ask for someone to hold your hand and help you decide what you want. The buttons are extremely well-organized by type (leather, wood, horn, metal, plastic, fabric-covered, etc.) and it's simply a delight to see and touch them all. And NOT expensive.. a lot of buttons start at $1.00!! It is what you make of it. I enjoy it.

Came to New York with the address of this shop in hand, hoping to find tiny buttons to embellish needlepoint. Was not disappointed!
The shop itself is a little gem, and the staff were friendly, pleasant, and helpful. I found just what I wanted, and more. The buttons are not inexpensive, but they are made from beautiful, durable material, with many special touches. I'll enjoy working stitching my purchases onto projects, and look forward to collecting more on my next visit to this wonderful shop in this fantastic city!

The experience of buying (a vast array of beautiful) buttons at Tender Buttons is completely ruined by the rudeness of the staff. I felt I was inconveniencing the staff-members I asked questions of; they were snappy and unwilling to help. These people don't even know the meaning of the term 'customer service'. Although I found the buttons I wanted I won't particularly enjoy going back to buy more.

One of the most lovely experiences that I had while visiting NYC was the part of an hour spent in this cubby hole of beauty nestled in just a few blocks east of Central Park. Our trip would not have been complete without our moments spent among the buttons. Our entire family highly recommends visiting Tender Buttons.

I can guarantee two things if you choose to visit this shop - (i) to find an inventory, albeit expensive, that is fairly extensive and (ii) to be treated like garbage. Without a doubt, this is the worst retail experience I have had in the city. The woman whom I encountered, who turned out to be the manager, was nasty AND unhelpful. She did not get out of her chair when I asked for recommendations for buttons for my coat. I was told to "just look around." When I tried to show her a picture of the same coat, she said, "why are you showing me this?" When I asked to speak with the manager, she informed me she was the manager and that my complaint was a result of "misunderstanding." How kind of her. I would suggest to the owner to fire this woman, as she has ruined twice for me a store that is a real gem in terms of offerings. Based on the other views, clearly I am not alone

Perfect in every way - beautiful buttons curated as in a museum, boxes and tables and picture frames full of buttons, buckles, large, small, antique, unique, foreign, adorable . . . Anyone who loves buttons, sewing, art, costume, history, New York City, Lexington Avenue, life, adventure, experience, and all that - will worship Tender Buttons! If you don't love it, you don't know.

This is the absolute worst experience you will ever have. They close the store before the time indicated on their door. You are treated poorly by a 60 year old angry and nasty woman who thinks that it is alright to treat customers poorly. The button selection is ok and very expensive. They donot let you select your buttons so you can end up with damaged buttons and pay the full price for it...I will never go back there it is awful and it is not right to treat people that way.
