Manhattan Island Marathon Swim
Wake up early and head to the water to watch competitors from around the world tackle the 28.5-mile course. The participants are professionals, so leave the swimming to them; but feel free to cheer at one of the four checkpoints around the island.

The Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular lights up the sky over the East River, with more than 80,000 dazzling explosions: Flickering Butterflies, Glittering Gems, Giant Silver Swallows, and Bursting Comets.

Lincoln Center Festival
Every July Lincoln Center puts on a series of indoor shows, contemporary and traditional dance performances, theater productions, live concerts, and the like. Past events have included the Mostly Mozart Festival and Midsummer Night Swing while participants have included actor Nathan Lane, musician Elvis Costello and performance artist Karen Finley. Be prepared: tickets can be pricy (from about $25-$75 each) and sell out fast!
