Calvin Klein

The famed designer has become a classic choice for alternative looks for brides hooked on runway chic. Recent collections have featured everything from a long silver gown with a stretch-satin bustier ($2,180) to a nickel micro-sequin tulle racer-back dress ($6,085). Alterations not included for gowns on sale.

Herrera also offers a good selection of mother-of-the-bride ensembles, veils, and wraps. Alterations ($300 flat fee) not included.

This upscale boutique features Clea Colet’s entire collection of glamorous gowns ($2,500 to $6,500), all of which she’ll customize to fit. The designers are “cautious with silhouettes”—you’ll see A-lines, not ball gowns—with small touches such as simple draping and delicate beading to keep the dresses from being plain.

Clifford Michael Design

This elegant two-floor salon has a good selection of dresses for nontraditional brides, mothers of the brides and more, including many A-line silhouettes (from $500). Stop by any time and expect to see at least a few gowns on sale, up to 70 percent off. Alterations included for in-house designs only.

Gallery of Wearable Art

34 E. 67th St., nr. Madison Ave.; 212-570-2252; galleryofwearableart.com

Designers Henry N. Jackson and Bronnie Kupris create plenty of designs to inspire you: a taupe bias-cut silk-jersey dress draped with intricate off-white floral garlands is particularly distinctive ($2,490). Bolder brides might consider the “Moulin Rouge,” a garter-and-bustier design with tiers of taffeta and organza ($5,990).
