Predictably, this midtown mainstay is packed with affordable watches from companies like Kenneth Cole and DKNY. But Macy's also stocks high-end pieces from venerable European makers like Tissot, Movado, Bulova, and Gucci (from $60 to $1,000).

Masters of Time

Specializing in vintage models like Patek Philippe from the forties and fifties (from $7,000), this store also sells alligator- and crocodile-skin straps ($60-$120) and offers top-notch repair services.

Michael C. Fina

Ten brands-including Hublot, TAG Heuer, and Breitling-complement every style from classic to cutting-edge, and every price point as well: from $250 for a Tissot to $18,050 for a stunning Breitling Bently.

Montblanc

Montblanc's watches have all the sleek elegance of its famous fountain pens. The most popular is the stainless-steel Summit ($750-$1,450). The TimeWalker Collection offers minimalist-Deco dials with alligator straps (from $1,950).

Movado

Best known for its iconic, super-streamlined Museum Collection (from $395), Movado has some chunkier styles as well. The Valor watches are made of sturdy, virtually scratch-proof tungsten carbide ($1,795).

Piaget

This elegant boutique wows with its chic status watches. We like the pieces from the Polo collection (from $14,200) and the sleek Upstream collection, which features classy watches in steel (from $7,100).

Saks Fifth Avenue

One of the few department stores left in New York that ensures you'll receive instant service if you let your glance linger at any of their display cases. Selection is limited, but all of high quality. The sales staff recommends the Hermès Cape Cod Double Wrap or a Cartier Tank to go with your tuxedo (from $150).

Swatch

Your fiancé's addicted to his cheery plastic Swatch? Entice him with a more sophisticated version. Check out the Swirl of Sand ($95), with stylized reflective hands, or the Wheeling, a blue-faced chronograph with silver subdials ($120).

Swiss Army

Swiss Army watches offer functional, economical elegance for tech-savvy men. The new equestrian-inspired Cavalier line includes square and round faces and a horseshoe-shaped clasp ($250-$275).

Tiffany & Co.

Those little blue boxes aren't just for girls: Tiffany also offers beautifully made men's watches. The Tiffany Mark collection offers styles in stainless steel, eighteen-karat gold, and platinum (starting at $1,350).

Time Pieces

This antique-watch shop is run by two Polish sisters who've been in the business for more than 25 years. Hundreds of watches are available: $200 will get you a Bulova, $7,000 a classic forties Patek Philippe.

Tourneau Timemachine

There's no better place to peruse high-end brands including Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Chopard. We love Tourneau's Le Tonneau-a stainless-steel chronograph with a silver guilloche dial and three interchangeable leather straps ($495). There's also a good vintage selection: a TAG Heuer will set you back only $650.

Watch World

Unintimidating and packed with stylish wares, this store is likely to please many different types of grooms. A Citizen Skyhawk is $300. Prices can climb to $700, though not much sells for more than $95.

Wempe

Owner Hellmut Wempe discovered Rolexes while traveling in Switzerland in the fifties and became one of the first European retailers. These days, you'll find seventeen other top brands-Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cartier, and A. Lange & Söhne among them. The Rolex Cellini Cestello, an eighteen-karat-rose-gold beauty, runs $5,350.
