Reason 4:
Because We're Spending Millions on a Shiny New Chapel for City Hall

Getting a marriage license in New York City isn’t just a necessary errand or any old bureaucratic ordeal. It’s actually kind of sexy. The quicker, more intimate alternative to the big wedding reception has been made fashionable by lots of well-knowns—from the fictional (Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big in 2008) to the real (Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft in 1964; Oscar de la Renta and Françoise de Langlade in 1967; Barry Diller and Diane Von Furstenberg in 2001; Matt Damon and Luciana Bozan Barroso in 2005). Later this year, the experience will become more pleasant. The marriage bureau will reopen in its new location on Worth Street—still steps from the Brooklyn Bridge—after a $15,000,000 face-lift. Says Jamie Drake, who’s working on the design, “The new space has a beautiful arcade, elegant chandeliers, and two chapel rooms.”
