Frequently Asked Questions

The App

Q: How do I navigate the app?

A: For articles from our websites and blogs (nymag.com, Vulture, Grub Street, The Cut, Science of Us), push the sliding navigation bar down and tap any headline to open the full story. Swipe vertically within stories and horizontally between them. Tap the screen once to bring up a thumbnail view of all web content on the app.

For issues of New York Magazine, pull the sliding navigation bar up to enter the Store. Toggle to the Library to access issues that you’ve purchased. Tap “Download” and then “Read” to open an issue. Swipe vertically within stories and horizontally between them. Tap the screen once to bring up a thumbnail view of the full issue.

Q: What is the difference between the iPad app and digital editions sold for the Nook and Kindle and for digital newsstands, such as Next Issue Media, Google Play, Magzster, and Zinio?

A: Digital editions on these other platforms are PDF replicas of the magazine. They are not interactive or designed specifically for tablets, and they do not include any content from our websites. Each must be purchased separately.

Subscriptions

A: If you signed in from the subscriber screens that appeared during the initial download, you’re all set. Technical Support

Q: I’m trying to download an issue, but it’s stuck at the "processing" stage. What should I do?

A: Close the New York Magazine app by double clicking your iPad’s home button and swiping (up) the thumbnail of the app page. When you are in an area with strong WiFi, reopen the app (by tapping on the icon in Newsstand) and try again to download the issue.

If you’re trying to download an issue just purchased from iTunes, know that you will not be charged again for an issue you've already purchased, as long as you are using the same iTunes account. On reinstall, you'll see a box asking if you wish to restore all purchases. Press Yes. If you miss that box, press My Account in the app’s bottom navigation bar when you’re in the Store/Library, and tap Connect to iTunes to restore your purchases. (Note that restoring can take a while.)

Q: I don't see the issues I've previously purchased or downloaded.

A: If you purchased through iTunes/Newsstand, check that the App Store account in your iPad’s Settings is the same one used to purchase the issues. If it is, tap My Account in the bottom left corner of the Store/Library screens. Tap I Am A Subscriber and then Connect to iTunes to restore your issues.

If you purchased a subscription directly from New York Magazine, be sure you have signed in to the app. If you’re still experiencing problems, please contact Customer Care at nymag-app@nymag.com or 1-800-678-0900.

Q: How do I delete an issue?

A: Issues in your Library that have been downloaded show an Archive button beneath the Read button on the cover. Tap Archive to delete the issue from active storage on your device. You can redownload the issue at any time and will not be charged.

Q: The app keeps crashing!

A: First, check for updates (within the Store in Newsstand) to be sure you’re running the latest version of the app. Next, check your iPad’s Settings to see if you have enough available storage. Each issue requires between 250 and 400 MBs to download. Last, try following these steps:

  1. Close all running apps (double-click the iPad home button and swipe (up and away) icons along the bottom of the tablet until they disappear.
  2. Shut down the iPad (hold the power key and then slide the red bar when prompted).
  3. Turn the iPad on again. The app should now be fine, but if you are still having problems, please contact Customer Care at nymag-app@nymag.com or 1-800-678-0900.
