This Celebrity Pool Party Is a Subtle Celebration of America

Memorial Day, as we all know, calls for remembering the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our nation’s freedoms and way of life. Which, among other things, includes pool parties. The holiday is best celebrated when these two traditions come together, like they did at a sun-dappled affair attended by Kylie and Kendall Jenner, among other slightly famous young people.

At first glance, it may look like every other rich-kid daytime bash thrown on any old warm day, but a close reading reveals a subtle attempt to commemorate the military and America generally in these photos.

In an inspiring image of brave young Americans working together toward a common goal, five women sit poolside, arms interlocked in patriotic fervor, an obvious nod to Joe Rosenthal’s iconic photo of U.S. Marines raising the Stars and Stripes at Iwo Jima.

Here’s a photo that celebrates the nobility of the working class (note the overalls), who built the world’s greatest democracy (as represented by the red, white, and blue bikini) — while carefully preserving the privileges of the ruling elite, who are able to pass their great fame and fortune along to their progeny, Jaden Smith and Hailey Baldwin. (The other kid? That’s Harry Hudson, a recording artist who documented his battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and appears to be doing fine.)

Meanwhile, read together, the tattoos on the hips of Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin say “sanity people.” It’s a stirring appeal for peace on a day that presents so many reminders of the consequences of war.

God bless America.
