LYDIA A. MILONE, one of the founding partners of BodnarMilone LLP—a White Plains matrimonial and family law practice—is highly aware that matrimonial and family lawyers are called upon to address the most important aspects of their client’s lives: their children, the family home, their life savings and financial future. “It’s one of the most traumatic times for the client as well as the family as a whole. That process can be managed in a way that substantially lessens the trauma and allows the entire family to move forward in a positive direction rather than being mired in conflict. Its success depends upon everyone involved,” says Milone. While one would expect a good attorney to earn the praise of her client, it’s noteworthy when an attorney is praised by the spouse of a client. “After one divorce matter was completed, the spouse of my client wrote to me, saying, ‘I was prepared to dislike you, but you always treated me with respect. You restored my faith in people,’” Milone relates. In addition to her knowledge of the law, one of the factors Milone attributes to her success in handling hundreds of cases over her three-plus decade career is emotional intelligence. “Whether the issue is financial or child-related, psychodynamics play a huge role in these matters,” she says. Her unimpeachable ethics are another reason Milone believes she is highly regarded in her field by the Bench and Bar, as well as by clients and others, who refer matters to her. “The only currency one has in life is their reputation. That’s the fundamental principle by which I live,” she says. Ms. Milone is actively involved in various professional organizations: She’s a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), is a past Vice President of the New York Chapter of the AAML, is a member of its Board of Managers and currently serves as Parliamentarian, is a past-Chair of the Westchester County Bar Association Family Law Section and is a current member of its Executive Committee, is a member of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Family Law Section Executive Committee, and a representative of that Committee to the NYSBA House of Delegates. She is also a member of the New York Association of Collaborative Professionals and the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals
