The evening before her 30th birthday, Kate Middleton attended the London premiere of the new film War Horse. She wore a lacy black floor-length gown by Alice Temperley (from the designer’s Alice by Temperley label) with a deep neckline, slightly cropped sleeves, and a thin velvet belt around her waist. Kate accessorized with a black clutch, while Prince William was forced to accessorize with a large, sheer, plastic umbrella because it rains a lot in England during January.

Kate reportedly enjoyed the film, so much that she cried “from start to finish” during the screening — director Stephen Spielberg said his wife had passed her tissues to dab delicately around her near-signature black eyeliner. In other “signature” Kate news, she posed with her hand on/hovering over her stomach again. (She’s just teasing us now.)

Her birthday celebrations today are, according to palace officials, set to be low-key and private; sadly not the raucous eighties-themed party we’d been invited to hearing about. Victoria Beckham will not be gifting Kate clothes either, but will surely send birthday wishes of some description — and more sincerely than Kim Kardashian, who used the opportunity to shamelessly plug some shoes. Happy birthday, Catherine! Enjoy the (fruit?) cake and all the gifts!
