General Mahmoud Ahmed Ali, the country’s committee chairman, isn’t as picky as, say, Congress or the Russians. On Wednesday, he told the Associated Press, “we signed with a Chinese distributor in light of Egypt’s economic situation,” who sent him the counterfeit merchandise, including bags with “large Nike logos on the front, but the zippers have ‘Adidas’ written on them.” Two brands for less than the price of one? Sure sounds like a real bargain! In a separate interview with Ahram Online, Ali said that if Nike is displeased with the apparel, the company should take it up with the aforementioned Chinese distributor. Nike released a statement reading, in part, “Nike is highly concerned that if these allegations are true, the athletes will have received products that do not meet Nike’s quality standards,” and, “We are now in discussions with them to see if a solution can be reached.” You know who can probably help out? His name rhymes with Shmov Shmarney, and he’s “in the schmatta business.”
