Rufus Wainwright Comes Around on Gay Marriage

In 2008 out singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright shocked gay activists by saying, “I’m actually not a huge gay-marriage supporter.” Speaking with the New York Press, he added: “I think that any law or amendment to the Constitution that deals with sex and love should just be banned in general … Frankly, if you want to marry a dog, why don’t you go ahead and marry a dog?” Later he said his comments were taken out of context:

To set the record straight (or shall we say gay?), I am not nor have I ever been opposed to anyone’s right to marry — straight or gay … I myself just don’t want to at the moment, and feel a strong tie to the traditional bohemian concept of being a homosexual, i.e., the last thing we want is to be like everybody else. But who knows, a girl likes options. Maybe someday I will want to marry!

It looks like that day has come.

It looks like that day has come.

Rufus’s boyfriend, Jorn WeisBrodt, has nurtured a change in the artist. From Perez Hilton:

I have been with Jorn for five years and he’s the light of my life. He’s my inspiration, support and he’s good in the sack, too! But I am very aware of living in the U.S., of the conundrum that you can’t marry your gay partner and give him citizenship. He has to apply for a green card and he may or may not get accepted, which is annoying when you’re in a committed relationship. If we were straight, we could get married and he’d get his American passport and it would make a lot of sense. I wasn’t a huge gay marriage supporter before I met Jorn because I love the whole old-school promiscuous Oscar Wilde freak show of what ‘being gay’ once was. But since meeting Jorn that all changed.”

See, if Rufus was straight, he wouldn’t need all that “light of my life,” “inspiration,” and “support” stuff. Straight people get married for just the “good in the sack” part all the time!
