Brooklyn Plant Will Use Poop to Help Power Homes

What you flush down the toilet might come back to warm you after it gets thoroughly heated, treated and broken down into methane gas at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The plant, which collects roughly one-eighth of the city’s waste, devised a way to break some of it down for beneficial use, like powering your home. “Enough methane to heat 2,500 homes will flow from the plant,” according to NY1, which adds that National Grid plans to use the methane in this way. Just something for you germaphobes to think about during the winter.
