Heartless homeowners have been attacking the fifties aluminum awning in its natural habitat — including neighborhoods like Greenpoint and Windsor Terrace — just because, as one preservationist puts it, “They’re not attractive.” Tragically, many awnings are left for scrap, and efforts to encourage mating have been unsuccessful. At this rate, future generations may never know the joy of being shielded from the elements by a rusty piece of metal hanging above the door.
