Footwear-obsessed Colorado GOP Senate candidate Ken Buck is quickly becoming one of the most entertaining politicians running this year. Only a week after saying voters should choose him over his female opponent because he doesn’t wear high heels and has poop on his boots, Buck, who is running in the Republican primary with grassroots tea-party support, has likely alienated a few of his supporters with some disparaging comments secretly recorded by a Democratic “tracker” someone who follows around a campaign waiting for gaffes like this one.
“Will you tell those dumbasses at the Tea Party to stop asking questions about birth certificates while I’m on the camera,” Buck said to the worker while laughing. “God, what am I supposed to do?”
Whoops! Buck isn’t the only Republican candidate who’s annoyed with having to walk the fine line of humoring his conspiracy-minded supporters without explicitly questioning Obama’s legitimacy himself. It’s an awkward position that’s tripping up plenty of candidates this season. But Buck alone has had the courage and conviction to call out the birthers for their craziness — behind their backs, to a Democratic operative.
