According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Representative Jose Serrano’s 16th Congressional District in the South Bronx is the poorest district in the entire nation. Thirty-eight percent of the district’s residents, totaling 256,544 people, are living below the poverty line; 49 percent of children in the district are living in poverty. “(The district) has always had poor people,” Serrano said. “It’s a reflection of a lot of things, and the bad economic times have driven a lot of things up.” [NYDN]
