John Kerry Fist-Bumping Snoop Dogg Is Somehow Not That Awkward

Photo: instagram

Picture, in your mind, John Kerry initiating a fist bump with Snoop Dogg at the White House. “My man, Snoopy Dogg Doggy,” Kerry says, offering his clenched hand as a smooth jazz rendition of “She’s Always a Woman” plays in the background. Snoop Dogg extends his fist, and for a few seconds, there are many hesitant, out-of-sync fist movements. Kerry does an exploding pull-away and wanders off as Snoop Dogg smiles gamely. It is all very, very uncomfortable.

Shockingly, though, when the Kerry-Dogg fist bump did happen in real life earlier this month — Snoop Dogg posted a video of it to Twitter yesterday — it was really not that awkward. The smooth-jazz rendition of “She’s Always a Woman” was still there, but the fist-bumping went off without a hitch. Was it a little weird when Kerry proclaimed “Oh, you gave me good pound,” as if he, the whitest, least-hip person in the world, is somehow the arbiter of what constitutes good pound? Yes, it was. But all things considered, this was the best possible way it could have gone down.
