Baltimore City Councilman Forced to Explain to CNN Why Thug Is Racially Charged

As protests brewed across his city yesterday, Baltimore councilman Carl Stokes was forced to take the time to explain to CNN anchor Erin Burnett why calling protesters “thugs” is not acceptable.

When Burnett asked Stokes if people like President Obama and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake are justified in calling the protesters “thugs,” Stokes explained that of course it’s not okay.

Of course it’s not the right word to call our children thugs,” he said. “These are children who have been set aside, marginalized, who have not been engaged by us.”

But how does that justify what they did?” Burnett shot back. “That’s a sense of right and wrong. They know it’s wrong to steal and burn down a CVS and an old person’s home. I mean, come on.”

At this point, Stokes had had enough.

Just call them n—–,” Stokes responded, exasperated. “Just call them n—–. No, we don’t have to call them by names such as that. We don’t have to do that.”
