early and awful

Paul LePage Claims Racist Remarks Were Part of a Clever Strategy

Maine governor Paul LePage is rather fond of making incendiary remarks — see his thoughts on Obamacare and Nazism or the president’s hatred of white people — but he insisted last month that his complaints about heroin dealers “by the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty” coming up to his state, often impregnating “a young, white girl before they leave,” had absolutely nothing to do with race.

Yet now he would like some credit for heroically launching into a racist tirade to get resources for his state. “I had to go scream at the top of my lungs about black dealers coming in and doing the things that they’re doing to our state,” he said during his weekly radio appearance, according to the Huffington Post. “I had to scream about guillotines and those types of things before they were embarrassed into giving us a handful of DEA agents. That is what it takes with this 127th [legislature]. It takes outrageous comments and outrageous actions to get them off the dime.”

You see, LePage never wanted to say any of these awful things. He just loves the people of Maine, and knows the racist, wildly inaccurate wheel gets the grease.
