Maine Governor Paul LePage Looking Forward to Trump Showing ‘Authoritarian Power’

When Maine governor Paul LePage looks at America, he sees a nation with a broken Constitution that’s teetering on the edge of anarchy. Fortunately, he also sees a solution: Donald Trump showing “some authoritarian power.”

“Sometimes, I wonder that our Constitution is not only broken, but we need a Donald Trump to show some authoritarian power in our country and bring back the rule of law because we’ve had eight years of a president, he’s an autocrat, he just does it on his own, he ignores Congress and every single day, we’re slipping into anarchy.”

The quote from LePage, a notoriously loose cannon, came on the Maine radio station WVOM and happens to sync up nicely with a Trump ad that came out today. It ends with the overtly authoritarian tagline “Donald Trump will protect you. He is the only one who can.”

Though LePage was strongly opposed to Trump early in the primary season, when he urged his fellow governors to disavow Trump lest he ruin the Republican Party, he eventually came around. Upon his endorsement of Trump he said, “I was Donald Trump before Donald Trump became popular.”
