The Week SI Jinxed the Core Four

Following a weekend that saw Curtis Granderson strain his groin and Alex Rodriguez get a day off to rest his knee, the injury gods began to strike down the so-called Core Four. First, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera missed some time — Rivera, at least, appears ready to return tonight in Boston — and then Andy Pettitte left his start Wednesday after just five innings owing to stiffness near his elbow. (At least Derek Jeter has some Bubble Wrap to protect him from the dreaded SI cover jinx.) But what happened this week that didn’t involve the Yankees’ B-team getting entirely too much playing time?

The Mets cooled off.

Despite Javier Vazquez, the Yankees kept rolling.

Lawrence Taylor got arrested.

Steve Lavin landed a West Coast recruit.

We remembered Ernie Harwell.

We met new Columbia hoops coach Kyle Smith.

And we asked Jonah Keri if the Rays are for real.

That’s it for us. Enjoy the weekend — we hope we will — and we’ll see you Monday.
