After losing its opening game to Ole Miss last week, St. John’s faced an uphill battle in their double-elimination regional. But they followed a win on Saturday over VCU with two more wins yesterday over No. 22 Ole Miss and No. 1 Virginia to force a rematch with the Cavaliers in the regional final tonight, with the winner advancing to the sixteen-team super regional. In the first of yesterday’s games, the Red Storm pounded out 22 hits in the 22–16 (!) victory. Then, still facing elimination against top-seed Virginia, Jeremy Baltz’s go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth (his second home run of the game) allowed St. John’s to play another day — at least.
