Ilya Kovalchuk was supposed to make a decision on Monday about where he was going to sign — that is, if you believe his agent’s tweets — but it’s Wednesday now, and he’s still up for grabs. Here’s what we know: He’s not going to Los Angeles (or is he?), and though the Islanders were reportedly interested, the Devils appear to be the front-runner, though they’d have to clear cap space to make it happen. Then again, they were the front-runners Monday, too, when he was reportedly all set to sign a contract. And then there’s the report that SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL has offered him a contract worth $9 million per season, more than the $8.5 million per season that the Devils are believed to have offered. This can only end with an hour-long televised announcement special, to be aired, of course, on Versus.
