Mets Reach Low Point Later Than They Did Last Year

Last season, the Mets finished 23 games out of first place, thanks largely to a September collapse in which they went 8-20. The first time they were as far as nine games out was July 19; they wouldn’t crawl any closer after that date. So take solace, Mets fans: The nine games you’re behind the Atlanta Braves right now is actually ahead of last year’s pace. That’s something. The tough 6-5 loss yesterday to the Phillies came at the end of a somewhat eventful weekend for the Mets; they cut Alex Cora and brought up Fernando Martinez, who at one point was a major prospect but kind of isn’t anymore. The Mets’ playoff-odds report is 1.2 percent. We’re pretty much done here. At least they can’t hire Isiah.
