Team USA’s Cameo Afternoon at the Garden

Neither one of these men is on the USA Basketball team.

With the Radio City appearance behind them and the start of the World Basketball Championships in Turkey less than two weeks away, the USA Basketball team popped into Madison Square Garden yesterday for an exhibition game against France. (Amusingly, as in soccer, the ESPN broadcasters kept calling it a “friendly.”) The Yanks drilled the French 86-55, but it wasn’t the most inspiring game. Coach Mike Krzyzewski still has one more player to cut — it’s looking like it’ll be Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook — before the team heads overseas for more friendlies. But nothing really matters until September 4, when the elimination round of sixteen begins. No one knows whether this team is going to be the best team in this tournament or not, and after yesterday’s display, still no one knows. But the tickets were just as expensive as Knicks tickets. Which may or may not be a bad deal.
