For the First Time in a Decade, St. John’s Is Ranked

Had it not been for a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week back in December, this probably would have happened already. But for the first time in over a decade — since November 28, 2000, to be exact — St. John’s is ranked in the Top 25: The AP poll has them at No. 23, while the coaches poll has them ranked 25th. This kind of thing tends to happen after you knock off the No. 4 team in the country in dramatic fashion for your fifth victory against a ranked opponent. (The Johnnies have now defeated five teams currently ranked fifteenth of better.) The new No. 1 in both polls, by the way? Duke, whose last loss came, yes, against the Red Storm, back on January 30.
