ESPN the Magazine’s May 2 issue includes a list of the best-paid athletes (in terms of base salary) from 182 countries and features athletes competing in seventeen different sports, including badminton, sumo wrestling, yachting, and motorcycle racing. And six local athletes made the list: Jason Bay has the highest salary of any Canadian-born athlete, while Alex Rodriguez is the best-paid American athlete. Also on the list: Martinique’s Ronny Turiaf, Puerto Rico’s Carlos Beltran, Uganda’s Mathias Kiwanuka (who we’ll still count as a New York athlete, though he might not be for much longer), and Venezuela’s Johan Santana. Speaking of Bay, by the way: He’ll finally make his first start of the season — and first appearance since suffering a concussion last July 25 — tonight, batting fifth against Houston. [ESPN]
