Report: MetLife Gets Naming Rights to New Meadowlands Stadium

New Meadowlands Stadium is seen before a game.
The venue currently known as New Meadowlands Stadium.

We’d been wondering how long New Meadowlands Stadium would be called New Meadowlands Stadium before it seemed silly for it to include the word “new” in its title. (To be honest, we’re not sure we hadn’t already reached that point this summer.) But in any case, it looks like the stadium’s getting a name change: According to the Post, MetLife has signed an agreement to purchase the venue’s naming rights, and it will be re-named MetLife Stadium. (Neil Best tweets that the new name should be officially announced by the beginning of the NFL regular season, and the Post report says it could come as early as the beginning of next week.) SportsBusiness Journal had reported back in June that the insurance company was in advanced talks about buying the naming rights, and today’s report says the deal could be worth as much as $20 million a year for twenty years, though the exact details are still unknown.
