St. John’s will play five games this year against teams currently ranked in the top ten, and the first of them — last night against No. 1 Kentucky — didn’t go so well: Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis came within two blocks of a triple double, sophomore Terrence Jones scored a team-high 26 points, and John Calipari’s team blocked a school-record eighteen shots en route to an 81-59 victory. God’sgift Achiuwa scored eighteen points to lead the Red Storm, who were again coached by assistant Mike Dunlap while Steve Lavin, who had prostate cancer surgery in October, rests and regains his stamina. The game, by the way, was the Johnnies’ first visit to Rupp Arena since the 1985 Final Four, when they lost to Georgetown in the semifinals. [ESPN]
