BABY PHAT

The Label: Baby Phat is high-style hip-hop wear with a healthy helping of bling and a pink quilted cell phone to match. Designer Kimora Lee Simmons is even working on a developing a fine jewelry brand, with her own diamond cut. There’s a marriage of high fashion and street style at the center of the Baby Phat story—literally. Kimora Lee Simmons, a Chanel model and muse of Karl Largerfeld from the time she was 13, is married to hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, who also founded Baby Phat’s parent company, Phat Farm, in 1993. Both companies were sold last year to the Kellwood Group for $140 millon. The label’s signature look is sexy and urban, with some Moschino-like over-the-top send-ups of old guard brands like Chanel.

The Look: Hip-hop diva.

The Designer: Kimora Lee Simmons is the designer for the brand. Her husband, Russell Simmons, started the brand accidentally, when he created baby tees emblazoned with the words “Baby Phat” to promote a fashion show for his men’s line, Phat Farm. Claudia Schiffer and Tyra Banks were seen wearing the shirts, and suddenly, there was demand.

Who Wears It: The young and the hip-hop—and a few others, among them Madonna, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Eve.
