1660s: Women do their wash in a pebbly brook running to the East River (today’s Maiden Lane).
1832: First reported commercial laundry opens in Jersey City.
1933: Minimum wage is established for women and minors in the NYC laundry industry; it’s 31 cents an hour.
1948: The city’s first ironette—a self-service ironing store—opens in Wood side.
