Writers Arm-Wrestle for Highbrow Title

Tonight’s boldfaced parties:

Tonight’s events lean toward the literary, perhaps in anticipation of the highbrow solstice that is tomorrow’s National Book Awards. Look for Tom Stoppard, Gay Talese, Malcolm Gladwell, Jonathan Ames, and Huey Lewis to be among those who’ll be out there dressed like writers.

If Minds Had Toes book party. Suite New York, 625 Madison Ave., nr. 59th St., 6 p.m. Lucy Eyre’s debut novel follows Lila Frost, Socrates’ secretary in the afterlife. It sounds interesting, and if the guest list for this party (Tom Stoppard, Liam Neeson, Renée Fleming, Graydon Carter) is any indication, expect some press. In anticipation of that buzz hurricane, Ms. Eyre has actually moved to Ethiopia.

Chicago tenth-anniversary after-party. New World Stages, 340 W. 50th St., nr. Eighth Ave., following 6:30 performance. Everyone who has ever performed in the musical or heard of the city will be there, including but not limited to Bebe Neuwirth, Melanie Griffith, Brooke Shields, Huey Lewis, Lynda Carter, Rita Wilson, and Ashlee Simpson.
Moth Ball. Capitale, 130 Bowery, nr. Grand St., 6:30 p.m. Guests scheduled to show include Gay Talese, Darren Aronofsky, Moby, and Lauren Ambrose. The theme is “A Night Out in the Rat Pack’s Las Vegas,” and Dominick Dunne and Malcolm Gladwell will be telling stories (the Moth Ball benefits educational storytelling programs). Guests can also pay $5 to arm-wrestle with Jonathan Ames.
Hugo Boss Prize. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Ave., nr. 89th St., 9 p.m. Scheduled to appear: Dennis Hopper, Dustin Hoffman, Mickey Rourke, Helena Christensen, Angie Everhart, Bryant Gumbel. That’s right. There’s a celebrity arm-wrestling contest tonight, and Mickey Rourke is going to be somewhere else.

Or check out our Agenda listings for tonight, selected by New York’s culture editors.
