Caroline Decides to Go for the Senate

Like a celebrity obituary, you sort of get the feeling that the Times has an article about Caroline Kennedy getting Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat pre-written somewhere, all ready to go to print at a moment’s notice. You can see hints of the template for this article in the story the paper just put online announcing that Kennedy has decided to go for the position:

The decision came after a series of deeply personal and political conversations, in which Ms. Kennedy, who friends describe as unflashy but determined, wrestled with whether to give up what has been a lifetime of avoiding the spotlight.

That must have been an extremely difficult decision, and now her life is going to be completely different! Except, wait. Caroline Kennedy’s feelings have absolutely nothing to do with David Paterson’s choice of senator. It’s nice that she’s thinking about what’s good for her, but in comparison with what’s good for him and the state, we’re guessing it matters a little less to Paterson. This hasn’t changed anything.

Then again, maybe we’re just not thinking like a Kennedy.
