At around 2 p.m. today, Roland Burris was sworn in as the junior senator from Illinois, ending the political headache that Rod Blagojevich set in motion two weeks ago. Surely a team of engravers is already at work carving another accomplishment into Burris’s creepy self-erected monument. Meanwhile, Joe Biden will resign the Senate seat he’s held since the Hoover administration later this afternoon. Tomorrow morning, Biden’s longtime aide, Ted Kaufman, will be sworn in as his replacement — until he steps aside for Beau Biden in 2010. Now that’s the way to fill a Senate seat.
