Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe (a.k.a. “the Thorpedo”), the last beloved champion swimmer before Michael Phelps and winner of five gold medals, does not think the controversy over Phelps’s bong-gate is overblown. “I think he’s a role model for a lot of people, and, you know, we have to look at that, and that’s what Michael’s apologized for,” Thorpe said backstage at the Y-3 show. “And his apology is sincere, and I give him credit for that part of it, and he’s accepted his responsibility to his fans and to the people that look up to him,” said Thorpe, who is no stranger to corporate sponsorships. However, Thorpe is not totally against pot smoking. “It’s bad in competition. It’s not bad out of competition. They’re the rules,” he said.
