This morning Gawker directs us to news of a citation that Ashley Biden, daughter of vice-president Joe, managed to keep under wraps until now. Apparently back in 2001, when she was 20, she got a ticket for possessing an alcoholic beverage and was fined $125. This comes on top of the story from last week about the video floating around of someone that looks like her snorting cocaine, and tales of an alleged pot bust and participation in a bar brawl. As much as these stories are buzzing around, though, there just doesn’t seem to be that much outrage about them — certainly not as much as, say, with Michael Phelps or the Bush twins. We even found our own eyes glazing over while reading all of the coverage, because we just weren’t interested. Why is that? Is it because the vice-president’s adult daughter isn’t prominent enough to be a big newsmaker? Or is it that occasional drug use is something that most Americans don’t find that objectionable anymore? Hmmm. Maybe it’s just that by now we’ve had two presidents in a row who have admitted to using cocaine, which kind of takes the fun out of getting all worked up.
