Ray Kelly Wants to Put the Whole City in a Snuggie

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly would like $21 million of Homeland Security funds, he announced yesterday, so that he might build a massive security system in Manhattan, in which surveillance cameras, license-plate readers, and radiation detectors would all feed information to a “state of the art” surveillance center like the one he dreamed about as a boy. Most news outlets are likening his idea to the “Ring of Steel” (London’s security template), and the New York Civil Liberties Union calls the plan “a matter of grave concern” that would “compromise our privacy.” But the Post dubs it a “security blanket,” which sounds a lot nicer.
