Gatesgate Tapes Released, Reveal Everything We Already Knew

This afternoon the Cambridge police department released the audio of the 911 call that eventually led to the arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr., as well as some police dispatches from the incident. Police commissioner Robert Haas said that the tapes will “speak for themselves,” which they do, we guess, but not in any kind of illuminating way. Besides learning that the 911 caller never knew the races of the people who “broke into” the Gates home, the tapes don’t shed any light on the dispute that Gatesgate hinges on — whether Gates was being so disorderly as to warrant his arrest.
