Twitter, Facebook, and Other Sites of Distraction Under Attack?

This morning we went to log in to Twitter to tweet this great story about jerks in the workplace (not for any particular reason! It’s just a really good article!), but oddly, the page wouldn’t load. A few moments later we tried to become a fan of our friend’s book (Flip! For Decorating) on Facebook — and, again, it wouldn’t load. It must just be a coincidence, we said to ourselves. But then! We tried to put the Times “Business” section into Pornolize (It’s more fun to read that way), and that didn’t work either. And wait, wasn’t Gawker having problems earlier this week, too?

Over on Twitter’s status blog, founder Biz Stone blogged about the problem. Apparently, they are under attack! A “denial of service attack.”

Says Stone:

Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users. We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate.”

All the sites seems to be working now, but only sporadically. A report about the earlier attack against Gawker says “the motive … remains unclear.” Who’s responsible, and what they are trying to do? Are they trying to make us concentrate? And if so, will they take the dog in a swing video next?
