New Jersey Might Embarrass New York Next Week

Despite some recent dithering, New Jersey will hold a vote on same-sex marriage next Thursday, according to State Senator Ray Lesniak. It’s still unclear whether the legislation can pass, however. “We’re counting votes,” says Steve Goldstein, executive director of Garden State Equality. “We’re not there yet in one of the houses but things have changed dramatically in the last 48 hours where the momentum has shifted our way.” How would a huge defeat for same-sex marriage on Wednesday create momentum for the bill’s prospects, and not against them?
