In his remarks after the meeting, the president paraphrased a passage from the Bible’s Gospel of Luke, “Parable of the Rich Landowner,” which Bethany Maclean also quoted in her recent Vanity Fair piece. “From those who have been given much, much will be demanded.” “America’s banks received extraordinary assistance from American taxpayers to rebuild their industry,” Obama said. “Now that they’re back on their feet we expect an extraordinary commitment from them to help rebuild our economy.”
