Man Gets (Too) Close to Biden in Olympics Security Breach

A man with a fake security pass managed to get within twelve feet of Vice-President Joe Biden at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Friday, Canadian police revealed Wednesday. He was stopped twelve rows from Biden’s section, according to authorities, who maintained the man was never “in close proximity” to the vice-president or his wife.

Police did not identify the man, though they said he “may have been dealing with mental issues.” Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Bud Mercer said the man “had an infatuation with the U.S. Vice-President.” (That smile is pretty undeniable.)

The vice president was never in any danger,” RCMP corporal Darren Anderson said. “It was determined that (the suspect) had no malicious intent.”

Two plainclothes officers stopped the man as he approached the VIP section, as they said he looked out of place. When they realized he was carrying a fake credential and tried to escort him out of the building, he tried to run, at which point he was arrested. No charges have been filed, and the case has been turned over to the Vancouver Police Department.
