Today, President Obama announced billions in federal loan guarantees that will allow a Georgia company to build the country’s first new nuclear power plant in almost 30 years. Obama said that this is “only the beginning” for nuclear power, though he also acknowledged that we should finally figure out somewhere to put all the waste. To that end, he’ll convene a “bipartisan group of leaders and nuclear experts to examine this challenge,” which means we’re just going to continue storing it in shoeboxes and Tupperware containers indefinitely.
