Ron Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll, Crowd Boos

With an impressive 31 percent of the vote, Representative Ron Paul stomped the competition in yesterday’s CPAC straw poll. But many in the crowd, those who might refer to Paul’s supporters with a pejorative term that we won’t touch, booed when his victory was announced. Weirdly, those in charge of CPAC may have been among the boo-ers. According to Politico, organizers “were plainly embarrassed by the results, which could reduce the perceived impact of a contest … ” So embarrassed, in fact, that a spokesperson eagerly made sure reporters heard all the boos directed at Paul. Mitt Romney, the winner of the past three straw polls, came in second with 22 percent of the vote. He was followed by Sarah Palin’s 7 percent and Tim Pawlenty’s 6 percent. Indiana Representative Mike Pence won 5 percent while Newt Gingrich and Chuck Norris’s bro Mike Huckabee finished with 4 percent.
