First, Hiram Monserrate escaped jail time for slashing his girlfriend’s face with a glass (it was just the freakiest freak accident ever!). Then, after he was expelled from the State Senate by his own Democratic colleagues, he got on the ballot to retake his old seat in a special election against Assemblyman Jose Peralta. And even if he loses that race (not a sure thing, amazingly), he has a backup plan: to run for Peralta’s Assembly seat. And then, we assume, county clerk, or building inspector, or dog catcher.
